10 Home Remedies for a Sore Throat

Sore throats are not only almost always painful but also very common. If your sore throat continues for more than a few days, seek medical checkup. But try these home remedies for they can help relief the sore throat:

  1. Try Lemon, Ginger, and Honey in Water

Treat sore throat at home with a tea mixture of honey, lemon and ginger. The ginger helps relax mucus, while honey and lemon soothe the throat. Sip it when it’s hot.

  1. Suck on Garlic

Garlic is an age-old medicine with homeopathic remedies thanks to its potent antibacterial properties. You will need:

1 fresh clove of garlic. Simply put one piece of raw garlic on each cheek, crush them and suck or chew to release its antibacterial allicin. Do it once daily to combat any pain-causing infection.

  1. Salt water gargle

A warm saltwater gargle can help soothe a sore throat. It also helps kill bacteria, reduce swelling and clean the throat. Use half-teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and do so thrice daily.

4.      Try Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, especially when mixed with honey, helps alter the pH of your throat while killing germs. With high acidity, it soothes pain and combats infection.

  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice (optional)
  • 1 cup of warm water

Drink the mixture warm.

  1. Prepare Chamomile Tea

For a sound sleep, sip a cup of chamomile tea an hour or so before bed. Its special flowers have natural pain-killing properties and also encourage relaxation. Use:

1 sachet of chamomile tea

1 cup of boiling water

Apart from freshening breath, peppermint also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties for encouraging healing.

Diluted peppermint oil sprays can also relieve sore throats. Peppermint helps thin mucus and can calm sore throats and coughs. Never ingest essential oils.

  1. Baking soda gargle

Also, try gargling baking soda mixed with salt water to relieve a sore throat as well. This solution can kill bacteria and also prevent the growth of yeast and fungi!

  • Use 1 cup of warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt

Do the rinse every three hours.

  1. Fenugreek

For sore throat relief, you can choose to eat fenugreek seeds, use the topical oil, or drink the tea.

Research backs fenugreek’s healing powers. It can relieve irritation or inflammation by killing bacteria and fungi.

Pregnant women should avoid fenugreek.

  1. Marshmallow root

Marshmallow root has a mucus-like substance which coats and soothes a sore throat. Add some of the dried roots into a cup of boiling water to make tea. Sip the tea two to three times a daily to ease throat pain.

If you’re diabetic, talk to a doctor first because it may cause a drop in blood sugar level.

  1. Cayenne pepper or hot sauce

As a pain reliever, cayenne pepper is rich in capsaicin, a natural compound that blocks pain receptors.

Ingesting cayenne mixed with warm water and honey helps to relieve sore throat pain if you don’t have open sores in your mouth. Start with only a few drops of hot sauce or a light sprinkle of cayenne. Remember, they can be very hot.

  • Plenty of fluids
